STUDYING TORMENTO IN THE 21st CENTURY: A SOAP OPERA APPROACH

Main Article Content

Abstract

This article proposes to explore the similarities between Tormento (as a realist
novel) and the soap opera. I engage with two critical approaches: the Galdosian
perspective, which has focused on genre hybridity in Tormento, and the approach that
explores connections between nineteenth-century literature and contemporary television.
By combining the didactic reflection with textual analysis, this study contributes
to highlighting the originality of Galdós’s narrative technique, and to demonstrating
the relevance of studying his work in the twenty-first century classroom, even in a
context as distant as that of California.
